Today as we celebrate the “birthday” of the Christian church, we rejoice that the gospel is proclaimed in many languages. Welcome!
In the Christian calendar today is remembered as the Day of Pentecost. This day comes from the Jewish festival that commemorates God’s giving the Law of Moses to the Israelites 50 days after they escaped from slavery in Egypt.
Just days after the risen Jesus ascended to heaven, Jesus' (Jewish) disciples gathered in Jerusalem to celebrate the Old Testament Feast of the First Fruits. At this occasion God transformed them by giving the Holy Spirit, as He’d promised. The disciples saw something like flames among and on them, heard a rushing wind and began speaking in many languages. The foreign pilgrims in Jerusalem heard about Jesus in their native tongues.![]()
Today churches celebrate the Day of Pentecost as the birthday of the Church. On this day in Jerusalem God baptized the waiting disciples with the Holy Spirit. Peter testified in Acts 15:9 that their hearts were purified by faith. On this occasion Peter preached his first sermon with a boldness that Christ was the Messiah. Three thousands souls were saved that day and brought into the church.
