In Beyond the Worship Wars the author grieves over the conflicts around traditional vs. contemporary worship and music styles. What makes for real worship? His research shows that though styles range from one end to the other there were some common denominators.

Churches that thrive in worship have warm hospitality, excellent music, commitment to mission outreach and thoughtful preaching. But number one on the list is that these churches “make room … for the experience of mystery.”

Worship is a place where humans encounter God. Worship services are more than just musical concerts, or edifying lectures, or lively social gatherings. They are an event to which people can expect to be touched by the divine presence.

This is impossible to plan for the wind of the Spirit, as Jesus tells Nicodemus, “blows where it chooses, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it goes” (John 3:8). Yet, we can approach worship in such a way that we are watchful and hopeful and attentive. We can pray for a blessing beforehand, and we can talk afterward with others about the ways God has made such blessings real. Most of all, we can come expecting that “surely the presence of the Lord is in this place.”

Catherine the Great once built a Russian Orthodox church in southern France so she could worship in her custom while visiting there. To be a true place of worship she arranged to have a barge load of Russian soil transported so the church could be built upon it.

It’s neither the dirt nor the solidity of its walls that allows us to say “surely the Lord is in this place.” That is the work of the Holy Spirit alone.

Fred Craddock tells the story of a missionary sent to preach the gospel in India near the end of World War II. After many months the time came for a furlough back home. He was wired the money from his superiors to book passage on a steamer but when he got to the port city he discovered a boat-load of Jews had just been allowed to land temporarily. These were the days when European Jews were sailing all over the world literally looking for a place to live, and these particular Jews were now staying in attics and warehouses and basements all over that port city.

It happened to be Christmas, and on Christmas morning, this missionary went to one of the attics where scores of Jews were staying. He walked in and said, “Merry Christmas.”

The people looked at him as if he were crazy and responded, “We’re Jews.” “I know that,” said the missionary, “What would you like for Christmas?” In utter amazement the Jews responded, “Why, we’d like pastries, good pastries like the ones we used to have in Germany.”

So the missionary went out and used the money for his ticket home to buy pastries for all the Jews he could find staying in the port. Of course, then he had to wire home asking for more money to book his passage back to the States. Not surprisingly, his superiors wired back, asking what happened to the money they had already sent.

He wired that he had used it to buy Christmas pastries for some Jews. His superiors wired back, “Why did you do that? They don’t even believe in Jesus.” He wired back: “Yes, but I do.”
