On October 31, 1517, Martin Luther nailed 95 statements on a church door in Wittenberg, Germany to correct errors in the church.

The following five statements of belief became central to Protestant Christians.

clip_image0021. Scripture alone is the final authority of Christian faith and practice.

2. Christ alone is Lord and Savior.

3. God’s freely given grace is central to salvation.

4. Sinners are freely forgiven by faith in Christ alone.

5. God alone is worthy of all the glory.

It is important to have the right beliefs about God because this will translate into the right behavior as seen in the following story.

While working at a shoe store in downtown Truro, Nova Scotia, the lady noticed a little boy standing on the hot-air register outside the bakery shop next door in his bare feet, trying to keep warm.

She was unsure whether to invite the boy into the store, or just what to do with him, when another lady came by. After a few words with the barefoot boy, she brought him into the shoe store. She bought him new shoes and heavy woolen socks, for which he tried awkwardly to thank her. “Are you God’s wife?” he asked his benefactor.

Taken back by the question, she replied, “No, son, I’m just one of his children.”

“Well, I knew you must be some kin to him,” he said as he thanked her again and ran out the door.

“A cheerful heart is good medicine” Proverbs 17:22

The great preacher of England, Charles Spurgeon, was admonishing a class of divinity students on the importance of making their facial expressions harmonize with their speech in delivering sermons. “When you speak of heaven,” he said, “let your face light up and be irradiated with a heavenly gleam. Let your eyes shine with reflected glory. And when you speak of hell… well, then your everyday face will do.”
